The Obama administration has
proposed a five year plan to sell offshore drilling leases. Over the next five
years 15 lease sales will be sold in six different areas (shown below). Many people have
had a very negative view on this, especially considering the 4.9 million barrel
spill that happened last year in the Gulf of Mexico. A lot of environmentalists
frown upon the fact that an oil spill in these areas could be ravaging to the
polar bear population. I tend to lead towards Obama's side on this one. Our
economy is in urgent need of Jobs, and I don't think the risks are that
substantial.
The five year plan will cover
these areas.
- Western Gulf of Mexico: sales beginning spring 2013.
- Central Gulf of Mexico: Five sales starting the spring of 2013.
- Eastern Gulf of Mexico: Two sales, including one in 2014 one in 2016
- Beaufort Sea: One sale 2015.
- Chukchi Sea: One sale 2016.
- Cook Inlet: One sale 2013
